Environment Secretariat - Student led sustainability initiative

Energy Bank – An institution which will conduct audits to calculate the negative impact of the school infrastructure and individual lifestyles on environment and equate it work that needs to be done for offsetting the negative impact.

Climate Collective – The division will calculate greenhouse gas contribution of the school and devise a plan to offset it.

Water Vault – Will audit, monitor and manage water resources in school to achieve a zero-water impact school.

Biodiversity Board – To manage the biodiversity in and around the school to offset the negative impact of the school as an institution.

Waste to Wealth Corporation – Will work to make the school a zero-waste institution by ensuring proper segregation and recycling of solid waste.

Process

Orientation

Will be organized for students of grades which the school wished to involve in the initiative. The process and goal of the movement will be explained. Participation would be optional and students will enroll as volunteers.

Creating groups

Students will be grouped under themes they are interested in working for. The students will be trained in conducting audits and analysis to identify the negative impact of different activities.

Presentation

 The students will present the results of their work in front of the school management. Together with the management a mitigation plan will be formulated.

Mitigation

The students will execute the mitigation plan with the cooperation and support of the school management.

Propagation

The learning from the entire cycle will be shared with the parents, media and community around the school. The students will offer their services to the community.

Complete package

 The school can choose to execute the complete package at once.

Theme specific

The school could decide working on one theme every year.

Student engagement

The school can choose one or two grades that they would like to engage in the programme. Ideally grades VIII and IX are involved

Nature of engagement

A group of between 5 to 7 students will come to work for the Environment Secretariat every day for 4 hours. A roster will be created for volunteers. Students will get an opportunity to participate in the activities once in approximately 1 and half months.

The students get to understand the logic of sustainability and the experience of putting it into practice.

Students get to see the link between learning and practice in the context of the real world.

They learn to put the learning at school into real life context. This enhances their interest in learning being provided at school.

The school as an institution climbs the sustainability ladder with the work of their own students.

Recognition of sustainability practices of the school by the parents, media and community.

Cost of Day Visit

Our resource person will visit the school to conduct the programme for 4 hours on all working days of the school. One day, 4 hours for each theme.  The hours of the out of school work required to execute the programme will be considered as school hours.

*The cost quoted above includes only the cost of our resource persons that will execute the programme. All actual cost of material required to execute the programme will be borne by the school. The cost is payable in 4 quarterly instalments from the date of contract signing.
